Copytrading and taxes: every trade counts

The surprise is rarely the tax rate. It is the volume. A strategy that felt like 'I copied one wallet' turns out to be hundreds of disposals when the year ends.

This is not tax advice, and the rules differ a lot between countries. But one pattern holds in most of them, and it catches copytraders off guard every year: the tax is calculated per trade, and copying produces a lot of trades.

The rule that surprises people

In many countries crypto is treated as property. That means selling a token, or swapping it for another token or a stablecoin, is a disposal. Each disposal has its own gain or loss: what you got for it, minus what you paid.

So a single memecoin round trip, bought and sold, is at least one taxable event. If you sold in three pieces, it is three. Your year-end balance is not what gets taxed. Every individual sale is.

Copytrading multiplies the count

When you copy a wallet, you trade as often as it trades. Some pump.fun wallets are in and out of dozens of coins a week. Copy two of those and a year can produce hundreds or thousands of disposals.

  • Partial sells count separately. copypump copies sells proportionally, so if the wallet sells in three pieces, so do you. That is three disposals.
  • Converting counts too. In some countries, swapping SOL for USDC or a token for USDC is itself a disposal.
  • Coins that went to zero. A coin that is worthless in your wallet may not count as a realised loss until you dispose of it. Check how your country treats this.

What to keep, and when

The good news about on-chain trading is that the record is permanent. Every trade your wallet made is on the Solana ledger. You do not need to screenshot anything. You need two things:

  1. Your wallet address. Most crypto tax tools can import a Solana wallet by address and rebuild the full history from the chain.
  2. Your deposits and withdrawals. Where the money came from and where it went. These set your starting cost and matter for the final picture.

Do it quarterly rather than once a year. Tools occasionally misread an unusual transaction, and fixing ten mistakes in March is easier than fixing two hundred in April.

Cost basis is where it goes wrong

The gain on a disposal depends on what you paid, your cost basis. With memecoins, three things make that messy:

  • Fees. In many countries trading fees adjust your cost basis or proceeds. Make sure your tool captures them.
  • Several buys of the same coin. If a wallet you copy adds to a position, you have several purchase prices. Your country's rules decide which one a sale is matched against.
  • Missing prices. Tiny coins sometimes have no reliable price history in tax tools. You may need to fill in values from the trade itself.

Four things worth doing now

  1. Find out how your country taxes crypto swaps. Ten minutes now saves a bad surprise.
  2. Set aside part of every realised gain. Memecoin gains can be followed by losses that do not offset them in the same year.
  3. Keep the trading wallet separate. One wallet for copytrading makes the record much cleaner.
  4. Count the trades before you pick a wallet. A wallet that makes forty trades a week will cost you in paperwork as well as fees. See pump.fun fees explained.

When in doubt, ask a tax professional who knows crypto. The cost of the advice is usually smaller than the cost of getting a year of disposals wrong.

Frequently asked

Do I pay tax on pump.fun trades?

In many countries, yes, and on each trade rather than on your ending balance. Crypto is often treated as property, so swapping one token for another, or for a stablecoin, can be a disposal with its own gain or loss. Rules differ by country, so check yours or ask a professional.

Does copytrading change my taxes?

It does not change the rules. It changes the volume. Every copied buy and sell is your trade, in your wallet, so you report it as if you had placed it yourself.

How do I get a record of my copied trades?

Your wallet's full history is on-chain. Most crypto tax tools can import a Solana wallet by its address and rebuild every trade from the chain. Keep your wallet address handy, and export your records well before any deadline.

Can I deduct losses from memecoins that went to zero?

In many countries realised losses can offset gains, but a coin that is merely worthless in your wallet may not count as realised until you sell or dispose of it. This varies by country. It is worth asking a tax professional before the year ends, not after.
