Why a pump.fun trade fails
A failed transaction feels like something broke. Usually it is a safety limit refusing to give you a terrible price, which is the right behaviour dressed up as an error.
A trade that fails is frustrating, especially when you are watching the price move without you. But most failures on pump.fun are not bugs. They are the transaction protecting you from a price you did not agree to. Here are the common causes, in the order you will meet them.
Cause 1: the price moved (slippage limit)
When you trade, you accept a maximum difference between the price you were quoted and the price you get. That is your slippage tolerance. If the price moves past it before your transaction executes, the transaction refuses to fill and fails.
On pump.fun this is by far the most common failure, because prices move so fast. A few buyers ahead of you on a young bonding curve can push the price past a tight tolerance in seconds.
What to do: retry with a wider tolerance if you still want the trade at a worse price, or let it go. copypump uses automatic slippage by default, which starts wide and widens again on retries. You can set a fixed tolerance in settings instead if you would rather miss trades than pay up.
Cause 2: the network is busy
When Solana is congested, transactions compete to be processed. Transactions with a low priority fee can wait too long and expire before they land. Hot pump.fun launches make this worse, because everyone is trying to get into the same coin at the same time.
What to do: retry. Most tools, copypump included, set priority fees for you. If the network is badly congested, expect some failures regardless.
Cause 3: the coin moved venues mid-trade
When a bonding curve completes, the coin migrates to a liquidity pool. A trade built for the curve can fail if the curve completes just before it lands. See what happens when a coin migrates.
What to do: retry. The next attempt routes to the new pool.
Cause 4: not enough balance
A trade needs the amount itself plus fees. Opening a new token account also takes a small refundable deposit called rent. If your wallet is short on any of these, the trade fails.
What to do: top up. With copypump you do not need to hold SOL for network fees: copypump pays them and passes the cost through. When your balance is too low for a copy, the copy is skipped and you are told.
Triage, in order
- Is the price moving fast? Probably slippage. Decide whether you want the trade at a worse price.
- Is everything failing, on every coin? Probably the network. Wait a minute and retry.
- Did the coin just graduate? Retry, the route has changed.
- Is your balance close to the trade size? Top up, or lower your size.
What the failures are telling you
A trade that keeps failing on slippage is a trade where you would have paid much more than you expected. That is information. On memecoins the price you see is not the price you get, and a slippage limit is what makes the gap visible. Sometimes the right response is to widen it. Often it is to let the trade go.
If you are copying and a trade did not happen at all, it may not have failed. It may have been skipped by your own settings. See why a copy trade was skipped.
Frequently asked
Why does my pump.fun buy keep failing?
Most often the price moved further than your slippage tolerance allows between the quote and the execution, so the transaction refused to fill. On fast coins this happens a lot. A wider tolerance fills more often, at worse prices.
Do I lose money when a transaction fails?
Your trade does not happen, so the amount you meant to trade stays in your wallet. A failed transaction can still cost a small network fee. With copypump, network fees are paid by copypump and passed through at cost.
What slippage should I use on pump.fun?
There is no single right number. Tight tolerances protect your price and fail more often on fast coins. Wide ones fill more often and sometimes badly. copypump uses automatic slippage by default, or you can set a fixed tolerance in settings.
Why did my sell fail when the price was crashing?
Because the price fell further than your tolerance between the quote and the execution. In a crash that can happen several times in a row. Retrying with a wider tolerance, or accepting the worse price, is usually the only way out.
