Why can't I sell on pump.fun?

If you can't sell a pump.fun token, it is almost always one of four things: the transaction failed, the coin was mid-migration, the liquidity behind it is gone, or the token is not a standard pump.fun coin. Each has a different fix, and one of them has none.

Why can't I sell on pump.fun? In most cases the sell transaction simply failed and can be retried: slippage, a busy network or an empty SOL balance. In fewer cases the coin was migrating, the liquidity behind it has drained away, or the token is built so that it cannot be sold. Work through the causes below in order, from most common to least.

The sell transaction failed

A failed sell is the most common reason you can't sell on pump.fun, and your tokens stay in your wallet when it happens. Nothing was lost except, at most, a small network fee. The usual culprits:

  • Slippage too tight. Slippage is how far the price may move against you between the quote and the fill. On a coin that is dumping, a tight setting means the price is already past your limit when the transaction lands, and it reverts.
  • Network congestion. On busy periods, a transaction without enough priority can expire before it lands.
  • No SOL for fees. Every Solana transaction pays a network fee in SOL. A wallet with tokens but zero SOL cannot send anything.

The fix is to retry with wider slippage and a priority fee, and to keep a little SOL in any self-managed wallet. The full list of error causes is in why a pump.fun transaction failed.

The coin was graduating to PumpSwap

A pump.fun coin that fills its bonding curve stops trading on the curve and moves to a PumpSwap pool, and a sell sent to the old route at that moment can fail. The bonding curve is the formula that prices a coin before graduation. When its allotment is sold, the curve is marked complete and trading continues in a pool on PumpSwap, pump.fun's own exchange.

Since PumpSwap launched on 20 March 2025, that move is designed to be instant, with no migration fee. In practice, the fix for a sell that failed right at graduation is to refresh and sell again, so your app or bot routes to the new pool. Background in what happens when a coin migrates and PumpSwap explained.

The liquidity is gone

When a coin has almost no SOL left behind it, a sell technically works but returns close to nothing, and some routes refuse to quote it at all. This is what most people mean by "the token can't be sold", and it is the case with no real fix.

On a standard pump.fun coin, the classic rug (the creator pulling the liquidity) is blocked by design: pump.fun's help center says that when a coin migrates to PumpSwap, the liquidity pool tokens are locked and burned, so "the dev cannot remove liquidity to zero". The same page adds the caveat that matters: a dev or any holder with a large bag can still sell it and crush the price. After enough of that, your sell is valid and nearly worthless.

How to spot that risk before buying is covered in how to avoid rug pulls on pump.fun.

The token was built so it cannot be sold

A honeypot is a token you can buy but not sell, and on Solana it is usually a token created outside the standard pump.fun launch. Mint authority on pump.fun coins is set to null, so nobody can print more of them, but tokens from other launchers can carry powers a standard coin does not:

PowerWhat it lets the creator do
Freeze authorityFreeze a holder's token account, so the tokens cannot move or be sold
Transfer hook (Token-2022)Run a custom program on every transfer, which can make sells fail
Permanent delegate (Token-2022)Move or burn tokens from any holder's account
Transfer fee (Token-2022)Take a cut of every transfer, so you receive less than the quote suggested
Non-transferable (Token-2022)Make the token impossible to move once held

Rug checkers such as RugCheck flag an active mint or freeze authority before you buy. If a token you already hold has been frozen, no setting or retry will fix it.

Can't sell on pump.fun? What to try, in order

If a pump.fun sell fails, work from the cheap fixes to the final verdict:

  1. Check the transaction on an explorer. The error message tells you whether it was slippage, fees or something else.
  2. Check you have SOL for fees in a self-managed wallet.
  3. Retry with wider slippage and a priority fee. Especially on a fast dump.
  4. Refresh the coin. If it just graduated, the route has changed.
  5. Try selling part of the bag. A smaller sell moves a thin pool less, so it can land inside your slippage when a full sell keeps failing.
  6. Try another frontend. The chain does not care which app you use. If the site is down, any Solana wallet or aggregator that supports the token can sell it.
  7. Check the token's authorities. A rug checker shows an active freeze authority or unusual extensions.

How copypump handles a token that won't sell

copypump handles unsellable tokens by retrying first and only calling it once it has tried for a day. When a copied sell, a take profit, a stop loss or your own 💸 sell does not go through, the bot always tells you. Then:

  • It keeps trying. copypump retries over at least 24 hours, through more than one route, before saying a token can't be sold.
  • It says so clearly. Only then is the position marked 🪫 can't be sold, and its cost booked as a realised loss, so your PnL is not flattered by a bag worth nothing. See realised vs unrealised PnL.
  • It does not give up for good. The tokens stay in your wallet, the verdict is re-checked every 6 hours, and if a route comes back, copypump picks it up.
  • Slippage is handled for you. The default slippage setting is Auto: it starts at 30% and widens if the price keeps running, so the trade goes through.

You can also take the tokens elsewhere: /withdraw sends a token as it is to a Solana wallet of yours, nothing sold. See how to withdraw from copypump.

How to be stuck less often

You avoid most unsellable bags at the entry, not at the exit. Unsellable bags are most likely in the smallest, youngest coins, where one large holder selling can empty the pool. In copypump, a market cap band (a minimum of $100k, $500k or $1m, or custom) skips buys in the smallest coins, and max impact skips a buy when your own order would move the pool too much. Both apply to buys only: the band never blocks an exit.

Some bags go to zero. Most pump.fun coins lose nearly all their value, and no bot or setting can sell a token for more than the pool will pay. Size every position as money you can afford to lose in full.

Frequently asked

Why can't I sell my pump.fun token?

Most often the sell transaction failed: slippage was too tight for a moving price, the network was congested, or your wallet had no SOL left for fees. Less often the coin was migrating to PumpSwap at that moment, the liquidity is nearly gone, or the token has restrictions coded into it.

Can a pump.fun dev stop me from selling?

On a standard pump.fun coin the dev cannot mint more tokens, and once a coin graduates, pump.fun says the pool's liquidity tokens are burned so the dev cannot remove the liquidity. What a dev can do is sell a large bag, which can push the price close to zero.

What is a honeypot token on Solana?

A token you can buy but not sell. On Solana this is usually done with an active freeze authority, which lets the creator freeze holders' token accounts, or with Token-2022 extensions such as transfer hooks. A rug checker shows whether a token has these before you buy.

Why does my pump.fun sell say failed?

A failed sell usually means the price moved beyond your slippage between quote and fill, or the transaction did not land in time on a busy network. Raise slippage for fast-moving coins, add a priority fee, and retry. Your tokens stay in your wallet when a sell fails.

What does copypump do if a token can't be sold?

It retries over at least 24 hours, through more than one route, and messages you when a sell does not go through. Only then is the position marked can't be sold and booked as a realised loss. The tokens stay in your wallet, and the verdict is re-checked every 6 hours.
